Women protest over Aqua pond in residential locality

Akiveedu: Protesting against digging of aqua culture ponds abutting residential area, a women launched a protest at Kuppanapudi village under Akiveedu mandal on Thursday. They pacified only after the officials swung into action destroyed the ponds.

According to villagers, women of the village took up the agitation in the morning. They grilled officials of revenue and fisheries departments asking them as to why they were not taking action against the owners of the prawn ponds.

It all started a few days ago when the villagers  noticed the fields adjoininig their residences were converted into prawn ponds. 

The so-called owners of the ponds also fenced the area with electrical equipment. A cow was electrocuted the other day. The children were also suffering for want of playground as the  ponds appeared overnight.

The agitating women complained that the fields beside residential locality was dug and water was filled into the ponds in no time. When they approached the authorities, they conveyed to them that there was no  permission for any pond in their village.

Following this, the women took up the agitation and gheraoed the officials of the fisheries department asking them to act swiftly. 

The women questioned them who would be held responsible if their children drown in the ponds while playing.

In order to pacify the agitators, the officials breached the ponds and emptied the ponds.
