Greater Visakha Municipal Corporation vows to do better in Swachh Survekshan-2019
Visakhapatnam: Even after the Greater Visakha Municipal Corporation (GVMC) made its efforts towards the waste segregation and waste management strategies as per the Swachh Survekshan (SS)-2017 guidelines, it failed to achieve better rank in SS-2018.
The Swachh Survekshan 2018 survey report on Saturday was a big shock to GVMC officials, which announced seventh rank for Vizag, disappointing the citizens. Earlier, the port city, which got third rank in SS 2017 report, was now slipped into seventh position.
The city had outscored 4,203 Indian cities by securing 1.61 lakh responses. Out of 4,000 marks, the city had scored 3,547 marks in SS- 2018. Three cities from Andhra Pradesh secured top 10 ranks in SS 2018.
GVMC Commissioner M Hari Narayanan said the SS 2018 rankings would not affect the morale of GVMC staff and we work hard to retain the top three rankings in SS-2019 survey report.
Some GVMC officials lamented the citizens must actively participate in the survey related to converting waste into compost and scientific processing of waste management.
The officials also said segregation of waste at source is limited to 50-60 per cent of households. The 15-mw waste-to-energy plant, which is expected to pave way for cent per cent scientific waste processing, will only be ready by December-end.
