12-year-old impregnated by brother-in-law in Ongole
Ongole: The city police registered a case on a youth and arrested him for impregnating his 12-year-old sister-in-law on Friday. According to the paralegal volunteer BV Sagar, the girl lives with her parents and elder sister in Kabadipalem of Ongole.
Her father is suffering from paralysis for some years and her mother is the only breadwinner for the family. Her sister fell in love with a boy of other community and married him two years ago.
Though it is against their wishes, the girl’s family allowed the couple to their house. The accused, Bhanuchander, in the guise watching TV, regularly visits the family and used to spend time with his sister-in-law. The paralysed father of the girl has no idea what is happening in the next room, except hearing the loud TV.
The mother of the girl said that she took the girl to a hospital as she missed the menstrual cycles. The doctors thought it might be a minor complication and sent home after giving medicine. Two days ago, the mother took girl to hospital again as she started vomiting.
The doctors confirmed that girl is a six- month pregnant now and the baby inside her womb is not formed well. They suggested an abortion and informed the local police and also to the child welfare officials.
The State Women Commission member Tammisetty Ramadevi, Women and Child Welfare Department Assistant Director G Visalakshmi and paralegal volunteer and HELP programme officer BV Sagar visited the girl and consoled her. They spoke to the mother of the girl and assured that the youth get maximum imprisonment.
Ramadevi said that they are receiving information daily about the abuses on girls and women by close relatives or family members. She blamed the obscene content being broadcast in TV channels and demanded the government to establish a mechanism to censor the content on small screen.
