Heart surgery on 750 gm tiny baby a success
Vijayawada: The doctors of Andhra Hospitals performed a rare heart surgery successfully on a premature baby girl, less than one-month-old and weighing 750 grams.
Now, the child is 61 days old, maintaining without oxygen, feeding well, weighing 1.25 kgs and will be discharged in a few days.
Addressing the media here on Tuesday, Dr PV Rama Rao of Andhra Hospital head of children’s services said that a five-day-old baby girl was diagnosed suffering from congenital heart disease at Bhimavaram hospital.
The baby was shifted to Andhra Hospital and was kept on ventilator. A team of doctors started all necessary intensive care treatment, he said.
Vikram, pediatric cardiologist said that the baby was evaluated with diagnosis of congenital heart disease.
After evaluation, a rare and complicated surgery was performed successfully for the first time in Andhra Pradesh, claimed Dr Vikram.
He said that the child was kept on ventilator after surgery for a total of 21 days, on CPAP respiratory support machine for 3 days and on oxygen for 13 days.
Dr P V Ramana Murthy, Managing Director of Andhra Hospitals said that this kind of heart surgery is performed in a few hospitals in big cities in India. He said that it was a proud moment for the hospital and the doctors.
He congratulated cardiac team J Sreemannarayana, Dilip and Ramesh, neonatal intensive care team and Dr Bhoojata on this occasion.
