Reforms should improve standards in higher education
Visakhapatnam: The round-table on the draft bill on Higher Education Commission of India was held here on Thursday. Former Vice-Chancellors, noted academicians, correspondents of various colleges and other intellectuals were present at the meeting and discussed about the draft bill.
Majority of participants felt that reforms should be aimed at improving the standards in academics. The delegates are also suggested to adopt usage of technology, enhancing values, autonomy to the universities and affiliated colleges.
The academicians also opined that the involvement of the government in the management institutions should be minimised. All participants requested the government that they need more time to deliberate these reforms instead of implementing the changes in a hasty manner.
The round-table was jointly conducted by Society for Integrated Development and Research (SIDAR), Centre for Policy Studies and Visakha Public Library.
President of GITAM Dr MVVS Murthi, former Vice-Chancellor of Andhra University Prof GSN Raju, former Vice-Chairman of Higher Education Vijay Prakash, former Vice-Chancellor Balamohan Das, C Simadri, DS Varma and others were present.
While opening the session, President of SIDAR Prof KC Reddy spoke about the reforms in higher education. Director Centre for Policy Studies Prof A Prasanna Kumar emphasised the need for more deliberation before a meaningful conclusion on the draft bill can be drawn.
