Bapatla: Deputy Director of Animal Husbandry Dr T Ramakrishna Prasad has said that communicable diseases from pet animals can be caused by viruses, bacteria, parasites and fungi.

“Scientists estimated that more than 6 out of every 10 infectious diseases in humans are spread from animals. World Zoonoses Day is celebrated in order to educate and create awareness on diseases from animals,” he said.

World Zoonoses Day was celebrated at Bapatla Veterinary Hospital on Friday. Several dogs and pet animals were administered free anti-rabies vaccine.

Forurm for Better Bapatla secretary PC Sai Babu said most of people were aware of rabies infection because it makes worldwide news.

But most people were unaware of the more common zoonotic infections like hookworms and roundworms which can also create health problems.

The animals serve as a reservoir for many diseases and persons caring for them as pets should be alert over the potential for disease transmission.

Animal handlers and the public should not be alarmed or frightened but everyone should respect the potential for disease transmission and use sound preventive measures such as wearing personal protective clothing and getting their pet animals vaccinated.

Later, they organised free anti-rabies vaccine camp. Staff and pet owners participated.
