Akiveedu: Residents of Santinagar blocked national highway here on Sunday, to highlight apathy of Akiveedu Panchayat officials in solving drainage problem in their colony.

They questioned the authorities over flooding of their colony with rainwater as they lacked proper drainage facility. Traffic came to a halt along 2 km stretch of the highway.

Former TTD chairman Kanumuri Bapiraju, leaders of CPM and YSRCP also joined the agitators by expressing their solidarity.

The residents alleged that the Panchayat officials had blocked outgoing drain system to prevent flooding of Dumpagadapa.

It may be mentioned here that residents of Dumpagadapa also staged a dharna at MRO office recently when sewage entered their main canal that supplies drinking water to the village.

In this backdrop, the houses in Santinagar were flooded owing to rains since Saturday.

The panchayat officials had been pumping out stagnated water by using motors.

The protesters explained to Bapiraju that almost all drains in Akiveedu were encroached posing threat to residential localities.

They blamed Panchayat officials for issuing permissions for construction of colonies without showing proper drainage system.
