Municipal Corporation of Tirupati to take over sports complex
Tirupati: On the instructions of Special Chief Secretary of Sports and Youth Services L V Subrahmanyam, the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP) would be handing over the Srinivasa Sports Complex here to the Municipal Corporation of Tirupati (MCT).
Across the state, the sports complexes’ and infrastructure were handed over to the Sports and Youth Services department. In Tirupati, the sports complex is under the control of the SAAP. Facilities for practising swimming, skating, badminton, tennis, Yoga, Judo and boxing events were available for the sports players at the complex.
The facility was established in 5.5 acres site in 2004. Every day, 500 sportsmen and sportswomen visit sports complex regularly for practice. Two days ago, L V Subrahmanyam had visited the temple city and held a review meeting with District Collector PS Pradyumna, MCT Commissioner Vijaya Rama Raju, officials and coaches related to sports.
The MCT officials have explained to the Special Chief Secretary various steps being taken for creation of sports infrastructure with advanced equipment in Tirupati, as part of smart city project. In the meeting, he directed the SAAP authorities to hand over the Srinivasa Sports Complex to MCT for its administration and maintenance. On Friday morning, Corporation Commissioner has inspected the sports complex along with the municipal engineers.
He enquired with officials concerned about ongoing sports infrastructure development works and questioned lapses in maintenance of complex. Later, the Commissioner has instructed the officials to submit a report on infrastructure and equipment available in sports complex.
Speaking to The Hans India, Vijaya Rama Raju said that the MCT wants to take over sports complex and provide better facilities for sports players on a par with international standards. “We are planning to bring advanced indoor sports facilities at Indira Maidanam as part of smart city project,” he stated.
