AP Govt to introduce mechanised boats in River Godavari
Rajamahendravaram: In the wake of recent boat capsize incident in river Godavari at Pasuvulalankavillage of East Godavari district, the government has decided to introduce mechanised boats or big rafts instead of country boats for commuting the people from river islands to other parts as early as possible.
According to sources, the government identified as many as 35 ferry pointsin the district in addition to nine in Konaseema area. The government took a decision to provide about 100 life jackets at Kotipalli and Narsapur ferry points which were identified as busyferries.
The government is also initiating steps to provide the mechanisedboats as well as rafts in Pasuvulalankaand Oodimudi ferry points within two days. Wearing of life jackets has been made compulsory to the passengers while travelling in boats.
Guidelines were issued to the officials of Water Resources Department (WRD) with regard tothe operation ofboats. Accordingly, the officials have instructed the boatoperators not to run the boat without lifejackets and warned that stern action would be taken against them if they violate orders. People living in 73lankavillages entirely dependon country boats to travel, as there are no bridges.
