Jumma bags Best Translated Book

Vijayawada: A book titled ‘Jumma’ was selected for Karnataka Sahitya Parishat Award, according to author Vempalle Shariff, AP media advisor for Sarva Siksha Abhiyan.

He said that the Karnataka State Government had announced the award for the book Jumma which portrayed 12 separate stories based on the Rayalaseema Muslim families.

He said that the book was published in 2011 and was translated into Kannada by Srujan with the same title. In 2012, the Government of India had announced Kendra Sahitya Yuva Puraskaram to Jumma in Telugu. 

The book was also translated into Hindi, English, Mythili and Konkani languages and recently translated into Kannada and published by Nava Karnataka Publications, he informed.

Shariff thanked the Kannada Sahitya Parishat for selecting Jumma as the ‘Best Translated Book’. Shariff’s story got a place in the book published by the Kendra Sahitya Academy ‘India at Forty’. 

He acknowledged his gratitude to the Government of Karnataka, translator Srujan and the Kannada people who encouraged him.
