Floods damage paddy nurseries

Srikakulam: Vamsadhara and Nagavali floods caused damage mainly to paddy crops and disrupted the road network to several villages and power supply also affected. Due to heavy rains in Gajapathi, Rayagadha, Malkangiri and Koraput districts in Odisha, flood water level increased in both Vamsadhara and Nagavali rivers twice in a span of five days. Heavy rainfall was recorded in catchment areas of both the rivers in Odisha.

As a result, road network was affected to Mathala, Nivagam, Kuddigam, Ponnuturu, Madanapuram, Somarajapuram, Anguru, Akulatampara, Veera Narayanapuram, Jilledupeta, Kommanapalli and Rugada vilages in two mandals. Power supply was interrupted in these villages.

Local streams and distributaries also received heavy flood waters due to rains in its adjacent areas of Odisha. In Pathapatnam mandal, road network was affected due to inundation of road with Mahendra tanaya river flood water power supply also affected at Pasisingupeta, Ramannagudem villages in the same mandal.

“Paddy nurseries were being destroyed due to stagnation of water. We will supply seed again if nurseries were damaged”, joint director of agriculture department G Rama Rao told The Hans India. We will enumerate actual loss soon”, he added.

Vamsadhara reservoir works were affected due to floods for more than a week. Bridge centre poles were damaged at the Neradi Barrage on Vamsadhara river in Bhamini mandal due to floods. In Palasa, Santhabommali and Tekkali mandals, railway under passages and low lying roads were submerged with rain water for days together.
