Another Advanced Foundation Course Centre to come up in Vijayawada

Vijayawada: Buoyed with the success of Advanced Foundation Course (AFC) Centre set up at CVR High school, the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation has decided to set up another centre at MK Baig High School in Ajit Singh Nagar to impart quality education to 200 more students in various municipal corporation schools in the city. Minister for Municipal Administration P Narayana has proposed and introduced the AFC in the VMC schools two years ago.

The first centre in Vijayawada city was set up at CVR High School in December 2016. As many as 200 students studying Class VI to X were selected and being given special coaching in maths, physics, chemistry, botany, english and zoology. 

This advanced course will be beneficial to attend the important entrance tests like IIT, said K Durga Prasad, deputy educational officer, VMC. He said last year, 26 students, who were given special coaching at the AFC centre in CVR High School, got 10 GPA points.

He told The Hans India, the objective of the government and the VMC is meritorious students of the VMC schools should become good professionals like doctors, engineers, scientists and civil servants.

M Pavani, 15-year-old girl is the daughter of a daily wage worker of Rajarajeswaripet, attending the classes since beginning of the courses. She said that she wanted to become a doctor and serve the people. Like, Pavani another student, Sriya, daughter of real estate agent, is also attending the classes regularly.

Majority of the students hail from the poor or middle class families. But these meritorious and hardworking children have achieved excellent results in 2017-18 SSC examinations.  

The VMC conducted an entrance examination recently to select 200 more students and impart special coaching, along with the regular academic education. Each section comprises 40 students, who are studying from Class VI to X.

B Ganesh, maths teacher, said all students attending the classes are very disciplined and hardworking and have vision for their future. He said the VMC has arranged auto-rickshaw facility from their homes to attend the classes.  

He felt the basics learnt by the students would be very useful to attend examinations like IIT and other courses. Another Class X student S Jayanth said he lost his father and his mother is taking care of him. “I like science and I wanted to become a scientist”, he said enthusiastically.    

As part of promotion of education, the government is distributing textbooks and uniform free of cost to the students and serving mid-day meals.  Municipal Commissioner J Nivas and his predecessors were very particular about the results of SSC examination in the high schools.

Consequently, 25 VMC Telugu medium high schools achieved 93 per cent pass in SSC examinations in 2017-18. Three Urdu medium schools achieved 100 per cent and 19 English medium schools got 96 per cent result in 2017-18. 

The deputy educational officer, Durga Prasad, said the second AFC Centre will be opened in MK Baig High School at Ajit Singh Nagar in the first week of August. He said special teachers will be appointed to take care of these meritorious children who bring fame to the VMC schools and city.
