Ongole: The YSR Congress Party farmers division district president, Mareddy Subbareddy on Monday sought to know whether the government was on the farmers side or on the side of paper millers. At the local YSRCP office, he demanded that the government explain the reasons behind the non-implementation of GO No 31, which assures Rs 4200 per ton of subabul and Rs 4400 per ton of jamail.

Subbareddy said that the government was not taking any concrete action but appoint committees to kill time while the farmers were complaining for months that the merchants were not paying them as per the GO No 31. He said that the farmers were receiving just Rs 2600 per ton of subabul and Rs 2400 for ton of jamail. He said that the district hosts about 1.70 lakh acres of social forest, which is about of 50 percent in the state. He demanded the government to implement GO No 31 throughout the state to give same rate as fixed by the ministers committee.

He also said that about 50 of the 56 mandals in the district are suffering from severe drought and the situation in the 23 mandals is very alarming. He demanded that the government take up drought relief activities immediately and provide fodder, water to save the animals and distribute relief for the farmers who lost their crop. He warned that the YSRCP will start agitation if the government will not initiate relief works for the farmers immediately.
