Prakasam Barrage receives heavy inflows

Flood water, rains to facilitate cultivation in delta

Vijayawada: The Prakasam Barrage is all set to witness flood water due to heavy rains in Telangana especially in Khammam district. According to officials, nearly 15 cusecs of water will reach the barrage on Saturday midnight.

The officials made arrangements to release the excess water into the sea by lifting the crest gates. The officials assumed that the water flow may continue in the next 24 hours.

The flow of flood water level was registered at Munneru bridge only four cusecs on Friday night. However, the flow reached up to 14 cusecs by Saturday morning.

The same quantity of water will reach the Prakasam Barrage on Saturday night, said Krishna district superintending engineer KV Chowdary and chief engineer C Satish Kumar. 

Speaking to The Hans India, they said that the crest gates would be opened to release excess flood water into the sea. 

Presently, the 10,000 cusecs of water are being discharged to canals in Krishna delta, they said. They ensured the water would be released to total paddy cultivated area in the delta.

As per the officials, the cultivation has been completed in nearly 60 per cent of total area. The present water and rains would help to complete the paddy sowing in the next few days. 

Meanwhile, the officials decided to stop water from Pattiseema to Krishna delta due to heavy rains and flood waters.

Krishna District Collector B Lakshmikantham asked the officials to alert the people in the downstream areas in view of tanks and streams may overflow due to heavy rains. 

Especially, he directed the officials of Vatsavai and Penuganchiprolu mandals to take necessary steps to avoid any eventuality from heavy rains in Khammam district.
