World Elephant Day at Vizag zoo

Visakhapatnam: As many as 172 students from 35 schools participated in an awareness programme on jumbos at Indira Gandhi Zoological Park (IGZP) to mark the World Elephant Day on Sunday.

The World Elephant Day is celebrated on August 12 every year. Competitions, including drawing, essay writing and quiz competitions, were conducted by the IGZP management. The quiz material arranged by the World-Wide Fund (WWF). 

The IGZP management conducted the competitions to the students of Class I to XII in schools and colleges in the city to create awareness about the importance of elephants and public support for protection and expansion of elephant habitats. 

Addressing the students, Chief Conservator of Forests Rahul Pandey explained the importance of biodiversity and awareness about the importance of the elephants. Yesoda Bai R, Curator of IGZP, C Selvam, DFO, M Raja Rao, Assistant Curator-II, IGZP also spoke. Later, certificates and prizes presented to the winners of the competitions.
