People told to become part of eye donation

Vijayawada: Prof Dr CV Rao, Vice-Chancellor of NTR University of Health Sciences, exhorted people to become a part of eye donation programme to eradicate blindness completely in the country.

Inaugurating the eye donation fortnight celebrations here on Tuesday, Dr CV Rao said that this type of fortnight celebrations would create awareness among the people and they would come forward to donate eyes instead of burning them on the pyre.

The Vice-Chancellor stressed the need to take up massive propaganda on eye and organ donation.Ch Vazeer, social activist, who presided over the meeting, said that the Central government should announce a year as ‘Eye Donation Year’. “This type of programme would succeed only with the active participation of a large number of people,” he added.

Dr G Samaram, director of Swetcha Gora Eye Bank,  called upon the people to make it a rule to donate eyes. He recalled that the Eye Bank had collected two lakh pledge forms from the people and cornea grafting was conducted on 880 people giving them fresh eye sight.
