Vijayawada: In order to strengthening the power sector in the state, the AP Power Distribution Companies (discoms) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE-a statutory Body Union Ministry of Power) for capacity building programme. The agreement is useful in tackling problems of peak load management, which is a challenge for the entire power sector in the country.

As the daytime peak load requirement keeps increasing and continuous peak power shortage, it has become a major challenge to discoms in the country to cope up with the demand. In the presence of BEE secretary Pankaj Kumar, BEE director Milind Deora, chief executive officer of AP State Energy Conservation Mission (APSECM) A Chandra Sekhara Reddy and chief general manager of Eastern Power Distribution Company Ltd (EPDCL) Sarath Kumar signed the agreement. The MoU report will be submitted to the state government.

Congratulating the AP discoms after signing the agreement, BEE secretary Pankaj Kumar said the capacity building programme would be more useful to the states like Andhra Pradesh. Pankaj Kumar further said the BEE has decided to promote Demand Side Management System (DSM) to the discoms as it was an excellent load management tool.

He said power distribution companies can also use the DSM to cut peak power purchase cost. Pankaj Kumar said the BEE would appoint the Project Management Consultancy (PMC) for providing manpower support to the discoms for facilitating DSM activities and ensure that the PMC conducts the load survey, load research and develop the DSM action plan for each DISCOM and ensure PMC to develop training module for each
discom.
