Call to sensitise people on donation of eyes

Nellore: Joint Collector–2 A Kamala Kumari made an appeal to the people to come forward for donating cornea for the benefit of many blind people. She participated in a programme organised on the premises of the Government General Hospital here on Friday and said Eye Bank in the hospital would pave way for giving vision to sightless persons.

The Joint Collector said that there is a need to create awareness among people on cornea donation that gives life to a person, who born with blindness or who lost their vision due to various reasons.

She appreciated efforts of the officials of National Programme for Control of Blindness and Visual Impairment (NPCB&VI), who started Cornea Bank in the hospital and asked them to start creating awareness on cornea donation. She said that the district is in second position in the state in the activities and exhorted them to stand in the first place.

Chairman of the Hospital Development Committee Ch Narasimha Rao said there are only three doctors out of four required, still they have been working excellently. He promised that they would provide necessary support for development of the wing. He mentioned that officials of the Medical Council of India (MCI), who visited the hospital recently have appreciated efforts of the doctors which is an inspiring aspect to others.

District in-charge DMHO Dr Ramadevi said donating eye is paramount in all donations as it gives new life to others. She appealed to propagate on significance of cornea donations.

District Programme Manager Dr M Manjulamma, Vice Principal of the Government Medical College Dr K Lakshmidevi, Government Hospital Superintendent Dr Radhakrishna Raju, ophthalmologists’ Dr A Srihari and Dr Jyothi and others were present. 

Prior to the programme, Joint Collector Vetri K Selvi formally launched a rally which was organised from KVR Petrol Pump to the Government  Medical College.
