Maris Stella celebrates World Literacy Day in Vijayawada

Vijayawada: The department of economics of Maris Stella College organised a programme to observe in advance World Literacy Day on Thursday.

Dr  B Josephin Sandhya Rani, HoD Economics explained the theme of the programme  and said that September 8 was declared as International Literacy Day by UNESCO in 1966 to create awareness on literacy issues across the world. 

She said that the theme of 2018 was ‘Literacy and Skills Development’.

The chief guest of the programme was Dr Chukka Kondaiah, OSD, AP State Skill Development Corporation.

Addressing the gathering, he stressed on learning skills, attitude and personality development of a person. 

Nowadays technologies like cloud technology, 3D, digital technology, aero space, automotives entered in every field and “we should prepare ourselves to fit into the system,” he added.

A skit was played by the degree students explaining the importance of Literacy, Education and Skill Development in present society. 

Competitions like essay-writing, elocution, poster making on the topics ‘Girl Child Education’, ‘Beti Bachao and Beti Padhao’, ‘Literacy and Skill Development’ were conducted to the students and certificates were given to the winners. 

Exhibition on silk thread jewellery was organised.

Former principal Dr Sr Rekha, B Koteswara Rao, V Swapna, Kalima Abdul, B Sobha and Dr  K Swaroop Kumar, students and others participated in the programme.
