Vivekananda’s Chicago speech remembered

Tirupati: The Chicago speech of Swami Vivekananda 125 years ago laid the foundation for the Independence movement in India and the entire world came to know about the greatness of the country, said District Collector PS Pradyumna.

He participated in the celebrations of 125th year of Swamy Vivekananda’s Chicago address held at Ramakrishna Mission Ashram in Tirupati on Tuesday. He said that it was after his address at Chicago only, Indians started thinking of fighting for Independence.

The leaders of freedom movement were greatly influenced by Vivekananda’s address which changed the entire attitude towards the country. There was every need especially for the present generation to read his literature to get self-confidence and courage. 

The Collector also advised that the love for mother tongue should get increased in everyone and cited the examples of China, Germany, Japan etc., where the governance was in mother tongue only. The essence of Vivekananda’s speeches was that everyone should grow with their own ideas and thinking.

Municipal Corporation Commissioner V Vijay Rama Raju said that world has become as a library and one should find out all good and bad from that. Everyone should make it a habit to read Vivekananda’s literature every day.

The Secretary of Ashram Swamy Anupamananda, SV Veterinary University V-C Dr Y Haribabu and other dignitaries also participated in the celebrations. On this occasion, Ashram organisers conducted various competitions for students and distributed prizes.
