Akiveedu: Megadindi canal is getting polluted because of discharge of waste from prawn processing unit into the canal near here.

Seesali villagers in Kalla mandal were more concerned about their health.

The prawn processing units located along Bhimavaram -Jawwalapalem main road release dangerous effluents into the canal in gross violation of rules.

Neither pollution control nor local administration officials acted against the poisoning of the canal, which is lifeline for fields in hundreds of acres.

The red-coloured liquid waste was directly entering the canal. None of the processing units tried to follow rules.

They are supposed to clean the effluents before releasing it into canal.
As there is no supervision, the owners of the units flouted the norms and polluting the entire area.

People of this region have been complaining about stink emanating from the waste of processing units.

Apart from local people, travelers who use this road have also been suffering. The farmers alleged that their fields have turned poisonous and waste lands because of the pollution.

Every Thursday, scores of devotees rush to Sai temple and organise prayers here. They were making rounds of the temple by closing their nose because of air pollution.

On the other hand, people of the area have been facing health problems, especially cancer as the officials failed to check pollution.

When contacted, AE of drains Jayaprakash confessed that Megadindi canal got polluted because of effluents from prawn processing units.

He said the processing unit managements were warned against the pollution.

The government would take up cleansing of the canal in near future, he added.
