Police foil teachers Chalo Assembly stir
Vijayawada: The police arrested nearly 300 teachers who were marching towards Assembly as part of `Chalo Assembly’ programme on Tuesday. The teachers have been demanding the state government to scrap the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).
In response to the call given by Teachers’ unions, several hundreds of teachers have planned to go to Assembly with the demand that state government should pass a resolution in the ongoing session to withdraw contributory pension scheme.
About 200 teachers gathered at the Dharna Chowk and raised slogans demanding the government to concede their demand. The teachers expressed their resentment over the inaction of the state government for many years on the issue.
The police swung into action and shifted the teachers in buses and vans to different police stations in the limits of the police Commissionerate. Teachers, along with other state government employees, have been opposing the CPS and demanding the state government to pass a resolution in the ongoing Assembly session and send the same to the Union government.
The teachers unions denounced the arrests by the police in the city. Scores of police were posted near Railway station, Dharna Chowk and other places and stopped the teachers from moving towards Assembly. APNGOs Association extended support to the teachers, who are fighting for the revival of the old pension scheme.
