US govt urged to reprint postal stamps on Gandhi
Vijayawada: The NRIs urged the US government to reprint the stamps on Mahatma Gandhi, which were printed in 1961 to mark his 150th birth anniversary celebrations, said Sriram Sonty, MD FACS, ophthalmology surgeon, settled in Chicago, USA.
Sriram Sonty was here to participate in the inauguration of the logo to mark the year-long birth anniversary celebrations of Mahatma Gandhi. He, along with Anand Gokani Gandhi, the great grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, visited Gandhi Hill on Wednesday.
Speaking to The Hans India, Sriram Sonty said 20 statues of Mahatma Gandhi were installed in big cities across the US and efforts were on to install 20 more statues. Sriram Sonty said that he addressed over 100 meetings to popularise the Gandhian philosophy and ideology.
He said Gandhi had preached non-violence and fought for the liberty and equality and added Martin Luther King, the champion of Blacks in the US, was the disciple of Mahatma Gandhi. He said Gandhian principles of non-violence were getting popular in the US and added he was happy to visit Gandhi Hill in Vijayawada and would participate in the celebrations of Gandhi’s birth anniversary.
