75 percent youth suffering from mental problems: Expert

Vijayawada: About 50 percent youth below 14 years have been facing mental health problems and 75 percent youth below 24 years age are suffer with mental problems these days, said Dr RK Ayodhya of Sree Manasa Psychiatric Nursing Home. 

He said that World Federation of Mental Health (WFMH) theme for this year is ‘Young People and Mental Health in a Changing World’.

Addressing the media on Thursday, Dr Ayodhya said that as part of ‘World Mental Health Week’, seminars and awareness programmes would be conducted. 

He said that people should overcome the stigma to visit Psychiatric clinic for treatment. 

He said that mental health problem was the third largest disease in youth. 

He said that problems like Depression, Phobia, Suicidal Tendencies among youth, Identification of Anxiety, Hyper Activity disorders, learning disorders which are more in adolescents can be treated by educational therapists.  

There are some disorders like borderline personality disorders, anti- social personality disorders leading to absenteeism, lying, which leads to drug addictions, alcohol and prostitution. 

Hence these should be identified in early adolescent age and should be treated through psycho education, psychotherapy and behavioral therapy. 
These Neuro Chemical Imbalances can be corrected by medicines which are approved by World Drug Approval Authority and prescribed by Qualified Psychiatrists only, said Dr Ayodhya.
