13K students witness cargo operations

Visakhapatnam: The three-day celebrations of Visakhapatnam Port Trust Foundation Day were concluded here on Monday. In commemoration of the VPT celebrations on its 85 years of existence, the management opened its gates to public to witness the cargo handling operations from the harbour.

A big response was registered from the educational institutions across all the coastal districts. Over 13,000 students from various colleges and public rushed to the harbour and had experienced about the shipping and cargo handling operations from the port. People from neighbouring states, Odisha and West Bengal, also arrived to have a direct experience about the harbour operations during the celebrations.

The students expressed their happiness after witnessing the port operations directly and gained knowledge over the activities in the harbour.  As part of celebrations, a meeting was organised at Port Kalavani Auditorium last night.

While addressing large gathering, Port Chairman M T Krishna Babu stated that the support of all the stakeholders, prominent organisations, employees and those related to the operations of port made the VPT proud to sustain its continuous growth till now and it would continue to grow in the days ahead. 

He stated that VPT has been awarded with many prestigious national and international awards including second cleanest port in two consecutive years 2017 and 2018 among all major ports. He stated the employees would be rewarded appropriately when the throughput would cross 68 million tonnes in the current fiscal.

The Chairman and the other dignitaries presented cash awards to children of class 10 of government schools in the vicinity of port area and to the employees children who secured admission for academic year 2018 through IIT, NIT, JIPMER, AIIMS and IIM.
