Swarnandhra to start shelter for homeless in Rajamahendravaram

Rajamahendravaram: Swarnandhra (a non-governmental organisation) secretary Dr Gubbala Rambabu has said that plans are afoot to start a shelter for homeless people in the city shortly.

Speaking to reporters at Press Club here on Tuesday, he said that the homeless people were facing many problems in society. The youth will be involved in this programme.

It was the duty of the government to provide shelters for the homeless people, mentally retarded and street children. Non-governmental organizations were also coming forward in this regard.

United Nations Organization had passed a resolution in the year 1987 relating to rights of homeless people and street children. 

As per 2007 census, there were 10 crores homeless people in the world of which 70 lakhs were in India and in Rajamahendraavaram the number was 2,000, he averred.

In New Delhi, there are 260 shelters for them and in Andhra Pradesh there are only 60 shelters for them, he informed.

He appealed to the people to come to the rescue of shelter-less people and street children.

Swarnandhra president Runkhani Venkateswara Rao, Helping Hands Group representative Anup Jain and others were present.
