Heavy rains lash agency areas in Vizianagaram

Vizianagaram: The agency mandals in Vizianagaram - Kurupam, Komarada, Jiyammavalasa and G L Puram—bore the brunt of heavy gales and downpour when the cyclone Titili made its landfall in the early hours of Thursday near Gopalpur. 

Banana orchards were devastated and transport for these mandals was obstructed due to falling of trees across the roads. Vegetable crops were also damaged in most villages. 

Chilli, brinjal, tomato plants were submerged in the rain waters. Almost 15 mandals in Parvathipuram revenue division remains in darkness due to snapping of power lines from the Wednesday night. 

As the power went off, children and patients in the hospitals faced inconvenience. Though some people have invertors, the batteries couldn't work for more than 5-6 hours. 

D Gopinath, banana farmer of Thotapalli village, said “I expected good income from banana crop, but my three acres of crop is totally damaged. I have lost my hopes. I need to bear interest on my expenditure now.” Apart from this, the train services are either suspended or terminated.
