Radio Frequency Identification tagging goes at brisk pace

Tirupati: For the first time in Rayalaseema region, the Municipal Corporation of Tirupati (MCT) introduced the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tagging for monitoring door-to-door collection of garbage in the temple city. The civic body had hired a private agency comprising technical teams for fixing the RFID tags to every house.

So far, nine divisions have been tagged and remaining houses will be tagged in the next 20 days. The MCT will bring the RFID technology to use from third week of November.

The public health wing of the MCT has divided all the 50 divisions into 371 micro packets for the easy collection of garbage. Once the new technology comes into force, sanitation workers should scan the tags through mini scanners every day at the time of garbage collection from each house.

The radio frequency signal will reach the Real Time Monitoring System (RTMS) once the tag is scanned. Civic officials can watch the door-to-door collection of garbage, attendance of workers and other details.

If any worker is absent from duty, officials can find out the reason immediately and can depute alternative worker to division concerned for garbage collection. The MCT will use micro packet maps for effective collection of garbage in all divisions.

Speaking to The Hans India, MCT Commissioner V Vijaya Rama Raju said that the RFID technology would bring best results in collection of garbage. “Our aim is to make Tirupati as dustbin free city by adopting new technologies,” he stated, adding that smart city means not only keeping main roads clean but also narrow lanes in residential localities.
