Update: 2018-11-01 05:30 IST

Vijayawada: The State government has decided to continue the existing policy of supplying five eggs in a week to children studying in 45,000 government schools.

Commissioner of school education K Sandhya Rani on Thursday released GO 100 in this regard. Consequently, three contract agencies would resume supplying of eggs to the schools with immediate effect.

Earlier, the state government entered into an agreement with three bidders in July 2018 to supply eggs to 45,000 schools for the midday meals. The contract ended on October 31.

The government recently issued instructions asking the midday meal cooking agencies to purchase the eggs and serve to the children during the midday meals scheme.

The cooking agencies can collect the bills later from the government. But, the cooking agencies expressed their inability to purchase the eggs because of financial constraints.

Keeping in view of the welfare of children, the state government on Thursday decided to extend the contract to the three agencies and continue supplying eggs till further orders are given.
