Rajamahendravaram: Five Greater Flamingo birds were spotted on the coast of Hope Island in East Godavari River Estuarine Eco (EGREE) System by the officials of forest department on November 3. Meanwhile, one Greater Flamingo was spotted in January 2016 at Sirrayanam lagoons during Asian Waterbird Census held annually during January this year. The Greater Flamingo birds are the most widely found species among the Flamingo.

They are filter feeders and they get their characteristic pink color from their diet of brine shrimps and algae available in coastal wetlands. Chief Conservator of Forests (CCF) and chief executive officer of EEGREE Dr Shanti Priya Pandey and CCF Rahul Pandey of Visakhapatnam sighted these birds while on their routine survey of mangrove plantations on the island.
