Anantapur: Civic authorities under the supervision of Municipal Corporation Commissioner PVVS Murthy and Town Planning staff have demolished temporary structures put up by businessmen and encroachments by domestic households on the JNTU road right from Thomas Munroe statue to the panchayath office.

Several sheds and temporary structures were demolished by municipal engineering personnel using cranes and JCB machines.

Murthy told The Hans India that notices were issued several months ago to vacate the municipal sites. While 80 per cent responded, only 20 per cent did not heed to their advise. The local panchayat officials too were alerted on the action.

Municipal engineering personnel started demolition drive on Friday and continued even on Saturday.

The operation was to facilitate road expansion and convert the same into 4-lane road. District Collector Veera Pandian, RDO Malola, Panchayath Raj Superintendent Engineer Subba Rao, Transco SE Vara Prasad and civic chief visited the places which were demolished.

Tight police security was arranged, however, there was no law and order problem as most of the encroachers cooperated with the officials.
