Rain disrupts normal life in Vijayawada city

Vijayawada: Normal life was thrown out of gear in Vijayawada, Machilipatnam and other parts of the district on Monday due to drizzle continued since early hours. Rain water stagnated on the roads in low-lying areas of Wynchpet, Rajiv Nagar, Moghalrajpuram, Kothapeta and Maruthi Nagar causing hardship to people. Due to slow progress of storm water drain works, water logged at many places since morning.

Government and private educational institutions remained closed on Monday and will declare holiday on Tuesday also. Small traders in the city left without income as trading activity halted due to the impact of rain since morning. People in the city heaved a sigh of relief as rain halted in the evening. Cold weather conditions continued even on Monday.

One person died in a mishap on Christurajupuram when a boulder fell on a roof of a house. The victim has been identified as Durga Rao, 28, a private worker. He died with severe injuries as the asbestos shed collapsed on him.

District Collector B Lakshmikantham announced financial assistance of Rs 50,000 to the family. In Machilipatnam town, low-lying areas were inundated with rain waters since Monday early morning. Denizens faced hardships due to logging of water on the main roads.
