Srikakulam: A high level canal has been proposed to carry Vamsadhara water to Itchapuram in Srikakulam district. A reservoir was completed at Hiramandal on Vamsadhara river and water will be carried to Itchapuram located near the border of Odisha State. A high level canal with 10 metres width is proposed commencing from Hiramandal to Itchapuram covering a distance of 105 kms to carry 1,000 cusecs of water.

Total estimated cost is Rs 1050 and Hyderabad based agency Contach Designs and Engineering Solutions Private Limited Company prepared detailed project report (DPR) and Rs 2.80 crore was also paid to the agency and it started its survey in July this year. The canal is proposed to avoid high budget cost  and to avoid tunnels.

But three viaducts are proposed to pump water as it is high level canal. It is proposed to fill the major tank at Nougada near Itchapuram with Vamsadhara water. It is also planned to provide water to medium irrigation projects in Itchapuram and Palasa assembly segments by filling reservoirs at Sankujodu, Damodara Sagar, Dabarsingi, Kalingadal, Pydigam..

Waters of Mahendra Tanaya and Bahuda rivers are not sufficient to fill the water in these medium projects. After verifying the DPR, government will appoint an expert committee and the committee will inspect spots and conduct a survey in detail again.

Later the committee will prepare minimum three alternatives designs for high level canal and finally government will approve one design among them. “We have submitted DPR to the government for its examination ” superintendent engineer (SE) of Vamsadhara project, M.Surendar Reddy explained.
