Crime against women, SC/STs on rise in Vijayawada city
Vijayawada: The crime against women and SC/ STs was increased under the purview of Vijayawada city. The Crime Data-2018 revealed by Police Commissioner Dwaraka Tirumala Rao here on Sunday confirmed the increasing crime rate against women compared to 2017.
However, the city police successfully maintained law and order and controlled the crime in other disciplines in the city. According to police commissioner, over 1,067 cases related to various crime against women were reported in 2018 compared to 1,002 cases reported in 2017.
Similarly, 48 cases were booked against SCs and STs in 2018 against 42 in 2017.On the other hand, property offences decreased from 2,130 to 1591 compared to last year. Similarly, road accidents decreased slightly from 1,463 cases to 1,444 cases. Cybercrime cases were also reported with a little decline of 187 to 182 during the last one year.
Commissioner Dwaraka Tirumala Rao said that the police department has introduced various programmes to create awareness among the people to reduce crime. He also said that programmes like Mahila Mithra, WhatsApp number, Cheruva Concept were yielding good results. He said that they had set up CCTV cameras across the city and introduced special action plan for monitoring traffic.
Stating that the government introduced various welfare measures to staff of police department, he said ‘Smart Police’ stations were also introduced in the city in the last one-year.
They were conducting awareness classes to students over the traffic sense, he said. They also received various awards and rewards for successfully discharging duties including providing bandobust duties for different occasions, he said.
