Nellore: A new road is planned between Nellore city and an ancient Kamakshi temple at Jonnawada where commuters can heave a sigh of relief with reduced distance and hassle-free journey.

The proposed way crosses Manumasiddhi Nagar, Sivagiri Colony and other areas where Municipal Administration department constructs special bridge via these areas. There is an irrigation canal named Uyyala Kaluva that was passing through the city earlier.

It was completely encroached in the city and the municipal body ratified the encroachments two decades ago. Now, there is no sign of the canal in city limits and it is visible in some areas only. Officials are planning to widen culverts on the canal located on outskirts of the city by constructing concrete structures.

A bridge will also be constructed besides a culvert on Jonnawada Road. Two culverts will also be constructed paving way for the proposed connecting road that joins the Necklace Road which lead to Jonnawada.

Swacch Andhra Pradesh Mission Vice-Chairman Dr CL Venkata Rao said that this would reduce distance between Jonnawada and Nellore city and around Rs 10 crore would be spent for the road project from the ST Sub Plan funds.

He said, as part of this project, that they will modernise the drain system along with completing concrete structure in the canal. He mentioned the Necklace Road being taken up in the city will be similar to one in Hyderabad that gives huge potential for development of the areas on the western part of the city close to Swarnala Tank.

He said narrow roads and congested areas on the proposed road will be developed which would be a boon for the local population. Municipal Administration Minister P Narayana proposed the plan and it is being implemented for overall development of the areas close to the Necklace Road and also to providing comfortable journey towards Jonnawada and other areas.
