Amenities in AP prisons improved a lot: Deputy Chief Minister N Chinarajappa

Visakhapatnam: Additional Director General of Police (BPR and D), New Delhi V H Deshmukh has stated that the prison administration is an important element in India.

He was delivering inaugural lecture at the two-day national conference on ``Prison Design’’in the city on Tuesday. Deshmukh requested all administrative officers, technical experts from various state prisons departments and police housing corporations to exchange their knowledge and share their views on best practices followed in their state.

He stated that overcrowding is one of the most challenging problems faced by the Criminal Justice system in India. He emphasised the importance of Prison Security, use of technology, staff development, Prison management and correctional programmes for Prison inmates. 

The conference on “Prison Design” is organised for the first time at Visakhapatnam hosted by Director General of Prisons, AP, in collaboration with BPR&D. Deputy Chief Minister N Chinarajappa inaugurated the conference. As many as 72 delegates from all over India  including Directors Generals from 10 states and Additional Directors Generals from six states participated in the conference.

Many senior architects, senior officers of Prisons department have expressed their views. On the occasion, Chinarajappa stated that the amenities in prisons in the State have improved a lot. Prisoners are given training in different trades so that they can eke their living gradually after their release.

He emphasised the concept of prisons design in correctional philosophy. The AP Home Minister also stated that many prisons in Andhra Pradesh have equipped with modern hospitals, schools, digital library, computer training centre. 

Andhra Pradesh DGP R P Thakur, has stated that the conference is being held for first time in Andhra Pradesh and very happy to host in the port city. Ashutosh Shukla, DG Prisons of Tamil Nadu has made a presentation on Prison Design. 

G. Jayavardhan, IG of Prisons, AP, Dr.I.Sreenivasa Rao, DIG of Prisons, CAR, Mahesh Ladda, Commissioner of Police, Visakhapatnam and others were present in the inauguration ceremony.
