Reforms helped to keep power tariff low

Vijayawada: The reforms in energy sector resulted in supplying power without increasing power charges and that benefited the consumer, said AP Electricity Regulatory Commission (APERA) chairman G Bhavani Prasad.

Addressing a meet on ‘Powering Andhra Pradesh: Energy Innovations Summit 2019’, here on Tuesday, Bhavani Prasad said that the expenditure on purchase of power had been reduced from 86 per cent to 76 per cent.

He also said that there were plans to purchase power for short term that would help reduce power purchase expenditure additionally. He further said that the commission was paying compensation to consumers and victims in case of any incident as per the guidelines of the Supreme Court. He said that several reforms were introduced that were useful not to increase power charges.  

The ERC chairman congratulated the energy department for successfully implementing reforms and added that staff worked hard and restored the power supply after cyclones and during emergency situations in a record time.
