ABS To Be Mandatory For Two-Wheelers Now

Update: 2018-04-23 18:21 IST

Any new two-wheeler launched in the country now will have to be fitted with either ABS or CBS

In the market for a new two-wheeler? We have some important news for you. All new two-wheelers launched from April 2018 onwards and registered with the RTO anywhere in the country will have to come fitted with either anti-lock braking system (ABS) or combined braking system (CBS), starting immediately.

The mandate was introduced by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and will be enforced by state-wide RTOs. It states that any two-wheeler launched from April 1, 2018, above 125cc will need to come equipped with ABS, while two-wheelers below that capacity will need to come with at least a combined braking system (CBS).

The ruling also states that existing two-wheelers in the manufacturers’ lineup will need to get the braking system fitted before the next financial year, i.e. before April 2019.

As per a report filed by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways Department in 2012, approximately 36,000 people lost their lives while riding a two-wheeler. That amounts to a whopping 26 per cent of the total traffic accidents in the country. A study from Bosch's accident research department suggests that every third accident involving a two-wheeler can be avoided with the implementation of ABS.

It is certainly a welcome move from the government and may even save a lot of lives. With ABS and CBS fitments coming as standard, a price hike is certainly expected across the spectrum.
