Decoded: ‘Volkswagen Ameo At Rs 5.07 Lakh’ Offer
Has Volkswagen actually slashed prices of the Ameo by that much?
If you are in the market for a sub-4m sedan, chances are that you must have come across an advertisement stating “Volkswagen Ameo starting at 5.07 lakh*.” It looks like a pretty good deal for a car whose prices otherwise start from Rs 5.62 lakh (ex-showroom pan-India). But is it really the case? Let’s find out.
Volkswagen has been selling the Ameo for quite some time now but it’s not amongst the top selling cars in its space. In order to make the package more exciting and value for money, the carmaker has been coming up with new offers every now and then. And this lowered starting price offer is another such attempt. However, there is a catch here.
Is it a good deal?
The Ameo seems to be at par with its competitors, which include the Maruti Dzire, Hyundai Xcentand the new Honda Amaze, as far as features are concerned. In its base variant, it gets dual front airbags, ABS, tilt and telescopic steering, and manual AC. Compared to the recently launched Honda Amaze, prices for which start at Rs 5.59 lakh (ex-showroom), it misses out on rear power windows, rear parking sensors and ISOFIX child seat anchors, but does get a telescopic steering.
When it comes to mechanicals, the Ameo’s 1.0-litre petrol engine seems underpowered on paper. It makes 76PS of maximum power and 95Nm of peak torque. In comparison, the Honda Amaze gets a 1.2-litre unit that makes 90PS/110Nm.
The Ameo diesel, on the other hand, has the most powerful engine in its class. It comes paired with a DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission, which is by far the most technologically advanced automatic gearbox in its segment. This engine makes 110PS of maximum power and 250Nm of peak torque. To put things in perspective, the Amaze’s 1.5-litre diesel engine makes 100PS of maximum power and 200Nm of peak torque.
Unfortunately, the Ameo is not available at an ex-showroom price of Rs 5.07 lakh. That would have meant that the road tax and insurance amount was calculated on Rs 5.07 lakh, which is not the case. Volkswagen is only offering a discount on the on-road price. Nonetheless, it’s a good deal for those who were already planning to buy the Ameo and even for those who are looking at a powerful diesel sub-compact sedan since the Ameo’s diesel powertrain is quite potent when compared to its rivals.
