With 800 egg farmers in Telangana and around 680 in Andhra Pradesh, both the states contribute nearly 45 per cent to the egg produced in India, according to Suresh Chitturi, Vice Chairman, International Egg Commission.

Speaking on the sideline of World Egg Day, Suresh Chitturi, Vice Chairman, IEC said that in India, for every egg consumed by per person, it provides job to over 20,000 farmers. “Highest egg consumption is in the Southern states whereas lowest is in the Northern India. Wherein the per capita consumption of egg in TS is 130 and 120 in AP.”

The International Egg Commission, a global organisation representing the egg industry plans to set up an egg nutrition centre in India. The centre would focus on disseminating information to health practitioners and to conduct periodic research about eggs. “As most of the members in IEC are from the developed countries, the focus on spreading awareness about egg till date had been in those countries.

Lately, the focus has shifted to the developing country like India and other under developed countries. We have structured a programme for which developed countries in the commission will provide us with the information and knowledge about what did these countries do to grow,” Chittur added.
