Hyderabad: In what has turned out to be a yet another attack to protect family's honour, father of a newly-married girl attacked her and her husband, a Dalit man, with a machete inflicting critical injuries on the girl, under full public glare at Gokul theatre under SR Nagar police limits on Wednesday. The girl sustained serious injuries, while her husband escaped with minor injuries.

According to police, Manohara Chary, a gold smith, was against the marriage of his daughter Madhavi (20) with Sandeep (21), a Dalit. However, the couple got married on September 12 at Arya Samaj at Bowenpally against the wishes of their parents and started a new life at Premnagar in Erragadda.

Enraged over her daughter’s marriage with a Dalit man, Manohara Chary, hatched a plan and accordingly called the couple over phone and told them that he wanted to gift new clothes to them. He asked them to come to Gokul theatre area around 3 pm on Wednesday.

When the couple was waiting for Manohara Chary, he came on a bike wearing helmet. As soon as he reached the spot, Manohara Chary took out a machete and attacked Sandeep. When Madhavi tried to stop him, he also attacked her. Both fell on the road. Manohara Chary attacked Madhavi once again inflicting severe injuries on her neck, hands and on other parts of the body.

Madhavi and Sandeep were immediately shifted to the local Neelima Hospital. When the condition of Madhavi deteriorated, she was shifted to Somajiguda Yashoda Hospital. The CCTV cameras captured the assault on the young couple. The police, meanwhile, registered a case under Section 307 of the IPC and took the accused into custody. Further probe is underway. Meanwhile, the Wednesday’s incident comes close on the heels of honour killing of a Dalit boy, Pranay Perumalla in Miryalaguda recently.
