Hyderabad: As part of the ongoing drive against offenders under Cyberabad Commissionerate, the Commissioner of Police invoked detention order against a white-collar offender Koneru Anwesh, 28, who is an event manager, residing at Bachupally under PD Act.
The police said the offender, a native of Warangal district and resident of Bachupally, used to search for flats in on a Facebook group and directly go to the flats where victims wanted to share their flats with the accused. He used to make them believe that his phone did not have signals as it was in roaming mode and borrow their phone on the pretext of calling his parents and walk away to some distance and make calls to the phone banking of the victim’s bank and select the IVR option for resetting the PIN and thereby enter the last four digits of the debit/credit cards which he had already stolen from the victim’s wallet (which they generally keep on the table) and secure temporary PIN entering the OTP which was received on victims’ phone.
Later, he would hand over the phone to the victims and immediately leave to the nearest ATM centre and withdraw the available amount in the account in an organised fashion in the limits of Cyberabad Police Commissionerate. The offender was involved in seven such cases this year under the limits of Gachibowli, Madhapur and Miyapur police stations of Cyberabad Police Commissionerate and in the limits of Banjara Hills Police Station of Hyderabad City Police Commissionerate.
This offender was arrested and cash of Rs 3,29,000, one debit card of HDFC Bank, one debit card of ICICI Bank, one credit card of ICICI bank (pertains to victims) and one Samsung J7 Pro phone were seized from his possession. His acts had been prejudicial to the maintenance of public order, the police said. He was detained in the prison to prevent him from committing such offences.
