This Vizag govt school is second to none

Visakhapatnam: Being the only Government Residential Blind School for Girls in the two Telugu states, this school in Visakhapatnam has produced many success stories in recent years. The visually challenged girls are proving themselves in different fields that they are no less than the normal children. In the first ever Visually Impaired Students’ NCC Parade held on the Republic Day this year, in Telangana, Anjanamma, a former student of this school was made commander over the 50 students, both girls and boys, out of the 28 girls in the team, 11 were the former students of the school.

Weight lifting is a tough sport, even for men, but a girl that too being a visually challenged girl, Magulapalli Satyavathi, who finished her class X from the school in 2017-2018, is on the way to create history in the sport. She recently competed in 30th Women Junior National Championship against the normal girls and scored 100 points in the event.  She was trained by the PT of the school, Ravi Kumar, from Class V. 

In the recently concluded district level Para-Olympics, six gold medals and six silver medals and one bronze medal was won by eight students and in the district level Sports meet held on the International Day of Differently-abled ( December 3), five gold medals, eight silver medals and seven bronze medals were won by 10 students from the school who participated in different events.

The Blind Girls School has a science laboratory and Computer Laboratory suitable for the needs of the visually challenged girls.

With complete financial assistance from the Divis Laboratories Limited the school was renovated with a music room, dispensary, and a dormitory with beds, mattresses and pillows, and a modernised kitchen. The school has also got music and yoga classes three days a week, which aims at the extracurricular and fitness of the girls.

The management of the Divis Laboratories made sure that the children get the best possible education and they provided the school with JAWS (Job Access With Speech) software in the computers for the students with complete blindness and MAGic software for the software for the students with low vision to gain access to the computer knowledge.

From the next academic year, the school will have a digital classroom and existing science lab would be renovated with latest equipment to enrich the experience of the students said Principal M. Maheswara Reddy

“The sole aim of the Divis management was to uplift the differently-abled girls by providing suitable infrastructure and environment. The improved facilities of the school helped the students achieving highest ever marks in the school for past four years. We are not leaving the girls after 10th Divis is also taking care of 26 students who are pursuing higher education,” E.S. Nagaraju, CSR Officer Divis Labs.
