Racoon, Snake and Banana Slug and An Important HR message
The problem may be the same but strategy can be different and therefore one may overcome the problem easily while the other may bite the problem painfully and live s miserable life. The banana slug has highly sticky, mucilaginous body covering and hence its predator cannot easily slow the slug.
Snakes often attempt to swallow the banana slug and due to its highly sticky body surface the snakes will often finds it difficult either to swallow or to vomit. Finally they vomit the slug and go for another meal.
But the above trick of the banana slug does not work with Racoon. Racoon once finds the slug, it immediately rolls the slug in soil to minimize the stickiness of its body so that the Racoon can easily cut the slug and can eat at ease.
The difficulty of swallowing the banana slug due its sticky body surface is true for both the snake and Racoon. But the snake fall victim to the trick of the prey and suffers whereas Racoon adopts a novel strategy to overcome the sticky surface of the banana slug and become the winner.
In most corporate the challenges and problems may be same for everyone but those who adopt wise strategy to overpower the problems becomes the winner and those who do not learn to use such strategy become mere victims of the problem and would ends up in blaming fate, destiny and cruel reality of life.
Racoon has looked for solution whereas the snake got into the problem. The ancestors of both the racoon and snake would have suffered from the problem of swallowing the sticky banana slug. In due course of time only the racoon would have developed the art of rolling the slug in soil to devoid its sticky body which snake appears to have not learned.
The corporate people must instead of looking at the real science of the above example must look at how the snake and racoon have approached the problem and the racoon becomes the winner and not the snake.
Leaders must tries to innovate several ways and means to solve the problem. Blaming the problem or avoid taking up the task due to the problem is not the right leadership quality or attitude. Most often the leaders engage the difficult tasks with the subordinate whom they do not like.
Similarly the leaders themselves would never own up the tasks that are difficult and challenging. Most corporate suffer from such mediocre performers. The HR function must be extraordinarily intelligent and wise to understand the above malady and also must know how to make people to have the intelligence of a racoon instead of going as snake.
Teach people to overpower the problems and challenges instead of blaming the situation and become victim of the situation. Nature has several examples for the man to learn and improve his leadership qualities and all that one needs to do is be a passionate observer of nature and have openness to learn for nature.
