Pull and Push Energy are Must for Corporate – HR Message from Vertebrate Biology

Update: 2018-07-03 23:47 IST

‘Pull energy and push energy’ is inevitable for life and success.  The people who suffer the worst whether from ‘push’ energy or the people who have enormous energy to ‘pull’ are the one ends up as ‘tired, desponded and disgusted and disgruntled individuals.

The contextual meaning of ‘pull’ refers to own energy to do things and ‘push’ means the energy that come from others, i.e. looking at peers, friends, relatives etc.

Look at the beauty of the creation of nature – the vertebrates.  Vertebrates are otherwise wise called as animals with back bone.  Fishes, amphibians (frogs and toads), reptiles (lizards and snakes), birds and mammals including man comes under vertebrate.

Look at the body anatomy of fishes, the head is positioned in line with the body (horizontally).  We call fishes the most primitive when compared to other vertebrates.  Next in the order of hierarchy are reptiles.  Although the head in these animals also positioned in line with body, but have the ability to lift and move the head.  They are slightly better evolved than fishes.

The vertebrate animal that has changed the story totally are birds.   The head of all birds are positioned well above the body.  In other words, the head is located above the heart.  This is true for all mammals, including man.

In birds and mammals, the heart has to pump (push) the blood against the gravity to the brain.  It is not just heart pumps (pushes) the blood, the brain also has to pull or draw the blood.   Pulling of blood by the brain and pushing of the blood by the heart against the gravity definitely come with cost i.e., greater energy expenditure.

In other words, both the brain and heart has to work in tandem for own existence and also to support the life of birds and mammals as a whole.  If one organ fails, it is not just that particular organ, either the brain or heart dies, the life of the animal itself goes away.

The HR function must keep the above essence in mind.  Must create both push and pull culture in the organization.

Every individual must own a goal and must work towards it.  So shall be the bosses.  They also must support the people like how heart pump blood to the brain.   Most of the corporate maladies are more due to the failure of both or one of the twos.   Sometime the subordinates may lack ‘pull’ energy or the bosses may lack ‘push’ energy.  Only when the above culture is created, growth and development of corporate is possible.
