Disfiguring number plates rampant
Old City: In a bid to evade traffic violation challans, people are now taking extreme steps to the extent of folding the number plates so that traffic police is unable to read the number. A number of two-wheelers in various parts of the Old City are now seen with disfigured number plates.
Some resort to the use of radium stickers and also tamper with the numbers and also change them. Traffic CI, G Balaji said, “Challan without helmet is Rs 135, riding on the wrong side Rs 1,000, no entry Rs 200, No parking Rs 200 and triple riding Rs 1,200.”
Senior police officers said that vehicles with improper number plate, misplaced numbers, folded number plate and no number plate would be directly detained.
Mohammed Rizwan, a local said, “At times one is in a hurry or in an emergency jumps a signal and he is fined. Also, serial offenders are often let off but people who violate once and that too in unavoidable circumstances get a challan.”
