This is one among the oldest bridges of Hyderabad completing almost 100 years. However, its upkeep is completely neglected and activists fear its safety. The century old bridge is one of the old monuments and land marks in the city.
The architectural marvel, Muslim Jang Pul was constructed during the regime of sixth Nizam Mir Mahboob Ali Khan.
It was destroyed during the 1908 Musi River Floods and was rebuilt later. This bridge is now completely surrounded with the accumulated debris, its railing is broken at several places and unwanted plantlets grown on the bridge.
These plantlets have been damaging the structure at many places and cracks developed on many arches of the bridge. INTACH state secretary Anuradha Reddy said that it was feared that Muslim Jang Pul will be destroyed due to official apathy this time.
She said, “The Bridge was earlier destroyed during Musi River floods but this time there seems no need of strong floods. Only official apathy will be enough to bring this to ruins.”She said that everything associated with history and archaeology must be protected and restored intact for the future generations. We can have a bright future and developed cities without damaging our history, she said.
The maintenance of the Muslim Jang Pul is the responsibility of GHMC however; no proper care is being taken for the protection of this bridge. Civic authorities have been boasting about their developmental activities but failed to keep the Muslim Jang bridge intact and well maintained. Despite several reports of the diminishing condition of the bridge, authorities are not paying any heed to it.
