Zoo staff prepare for hot days ahead, keep animals cool

Bahadurpura: Authorities at Nehru Zoological Park have put in place the complete arrangements to deal with the summer heat and protect the wild animals, birds and reptiles in the park during the next few months.

 Conventionally, the zoo authorities take up the cooling methods before the start of summer season and these methods would be put in place during four months until the start of Monsoon.

 The precautionary measures are being taken to avoid sun stroke and summer stress to the animals to the wild animals. These arrangements would be in place from March to mid June in the interest of wild animals, their health care and protection from weather hardship.
 The authorities have installed Sprinklers and small rain guns in all animal enclusures as part of the precautions.

Arrangements for Animals:
    Foggers (Mist like falling of water) will be installed in Reptile house, Macaw, (Pheasant area) and aviary area in the Zoo park.
     Thunga grass will be placed over the roof of all the animals and birds enclosures.
     More than 50 air coolers will be erected in animal enclosures like Chimpanzee, Monkeys, Tigers, Jaguars, cheetah, lions and panthers.
     Air condition and exhaust fans has been installed in the Nocturnal Animal House.
     Shady shelters have been provided to all the herbivore enclosures.
     Summer seasonal fruits like Watermelon, Muskmelon and citrus variety fruits are given to all apes, monkeys, primates, birds and bears.
     Ample protected drinking water to all animal houses from time to time to avoid dehydration.
     Glucon-D, Electrol powder, Vitamin-c supplements, B-complex supplements and thermocare liquid which is dissolved in water and given to the animals/birds to avoid summer stress.

All the enclosures are surrounded and 80 per cent is covered, like windows, ventilators and doors will be covered with Kashkash Thattis, gunny cloths to avoid direct sunlight exposure on the animals. At least 3 to 4 times watering will be done on the kashkash thattis and thunga grass to avoid summer heat.

All animal keepers, head animal keepers, park supervisors take up preventive steps from time to time to avoid summer stress to the wild animals and birds.Green shade nets will be placed over the roof of the birds enclosures, windows, doors of the night houses as per the requirement.
