Displaced hawkers allotted new space
Charminar: Finally, the hawkers near Charminar have managed to get what they were demanding in order to continue their business activities. These road side vendors have been allotted space from Gulzar Houz to Charkaman by the officials.
There have been tussles between hawkers and gold traders on the stretch over the decision of authorities to allow them the space in front of their shops. The hawkers were displaced from Charminar surrounding following the Charminar Pedestrian Project (CPP) however they were demanding for the alternative space for them to continue their business.
Hawkers staged protests and demanded the government officials to provide them the suitable place. They were allotted space near Gulzar Houz but the gold & silver traders were up in arms against it.
The huge number of hawkers in front of the jewellery shops was apparently hindering their business. This created quite a ruckus in the area. Local political leaders, government officials and in presence of police have come to an amicable solution later.
The deputy commissioner, town planning officials from GHMC, traffic police and others allotted the space to about 104 eligible hawkers on Gulzar House to Charkaman area.
The allotment was made on Sunday evening and hawkers started installing their business from Monday. Earlier, the hawkers were allotted place on footpath of the stretch but now officials allowed them to carry out their business on the road. This move has resolved the issue temporarily and hawkers are expected to be rehabilitated suitably later.
