Rakshapuram turns into Jowar roti ki galli

Rakshapuram/Phisalbanda: Just before the sun sets, the main streets of Rakshapuram and Phisalbanda turn into what the locals call Jowar roti ki galli. About ten roti makers mostly women take their places on the street and sell rotis till 10 p.m. This trend of jowar roti sellers is a recent phenomenon that started six months back.

Rakshapuram and Phisalbanda have become popular for the gluten free flour rotis and people from faraway places come here to pick up the healthy rotis

K Laxmi a resident of Ibrahimpatnam said that she comes from 22 km to sell Jowar rotis. She said, “People these days do now know how to make jowar rotis so there is a huge demand. Every day I sell rotis worth 3 kg. Each roti is priced Rs 10.” L Rashmi resident of Uppuguda said that in Rakshapuram area is now known for jowar rotis. She adds, “I learnt to make jowar rotis from my grandmother. It is coming handy now. I like my job as it gives me independence and I do what I like, which is making rotis.”

Dr Narayani a private practitioner says, “People have begun to understand the value of this Sorghum flour which is gluten free and does a world of good for the heart. No doubt it is becoming popular. It is loaded with calcium, protein, potassium, phosphorous and iron.”

People are lapping it up as the price is cheap and many modern day mothers do not know how to make these rotis. Riyaz Ahmed, a customer says, “I buy the rotis every day as they are cheap and a healthy option.” A seller J Bhujji resident of Uppuguda said Jowar is used decades back commonly but now only the old generation are using this Jowar Rotis. 

Md Mujeeb a customer and resident of Edi Bazaar said that to buy this Jowar Roti he'll come from 2km away, Mother used to made and eat but now as she became old so he's buying this Jowar Rotis. Md Mujeeb a customer and resident of Edi Bazaar said he comes from 2km away; my mother used to make them but now she is old and does not have strength in her hands.
